It is written that Christchurch is like being in an English town. While the Christchurch neighborhoods have the English feel with manicured gardens hidden behind walled yards, a freshness of design appears within the assortment of architectural house styles. Amongst the Victorian cottages are newer houses built with similarities to current European and Scandinavian styles: white stucco walls, clean lines, natural wood screens, bold accent colors, both flat and pitched roofs. These house do not call out a new revolution of housing or style, they carefully assemble together elements, forms and ideas that have been emerging since the modern movement in both residential and commercial architecture. It is a fresh sight to see house that are not regurgitated architectural elements that have been used and reused decade after decade. These houses give the possibility to reflect on what is a house without jumping off into solutions that are not homes for the families living in them.
